What To Look For In Colostrum?

What To Look For In Colostrum?

Colostrum is a nutrient rich form of milk that comes right at the start of the milking process, it contains several compounds that you simply don’t get from standard milk. These are designed to help an infant develop it’s immune system or help it grow.

Which all sounds good, and yes, in this case what’s good for calves is good for humans, at least as far as the studies show.

The downside, is that most colostrum supplements are suggesting a serving of a couple of grams, when in reality a serving would be pints. Now, there is a work around for this, and yes, we’re aware that we’re going to sound a little bit biased because it’s the solution we use.

And that’s standardization. We know which compounds are responsible for colostrum’s benefits. And the doses have been studied and recorded, meaning we can standardize for it. So, first and foremost if you want a product that works we’re going to have to make sure that there’s enough immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs), and growth factors.

There’s a few other things in colostrum too, probiotics and proteins etc, but if you want enough of those, you really need to be drinking raw colostrum.

So, onto the most important question. What do each of the compounds in colostrum do and what are the dosages used in the studies?

These examples the most commonly used doses in successful studies using colostrum.

  • Immunoglobulins: At least 400-500mg per serving for optimal immune support.
  • Lactoferrin: 100-200mg per serving to aid gut health and fight bacteria.
  • PRPs: 100-200mg per serving to modulate immune responses and promote tissue repair.
  • Growth Factors: 50-200ng per serving to support recovery and cellular repair.

And yes, we’ve standardized to the top end of all of these. So there’s our little bit of self-promotion. And we’ll do it once again when we show you how much none standardized colostrum, you’d need to get all of these servings.

What Compounds in Colostrum Do What?

1. Immunoglobulins

Immunoglobulins are the antibodies in colostrum, they’re what’s responsible for an awful lot of it’s immune system boosting effects. And they’re particularly effective when it comes to gut health. They create a shield against harmful microbes and have a host of benefits when it comes to digestion, bloating and a host of gut issues.

But they don’t just fight off infections—they also help reduce inflammation. This can be helpful for people dealing with conditions like autoimmune issues or chronic inflammation.

2. Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a protein that fights bacteria and viruses, but it does a lot more than just protect you from getting sick. And on top of that even helps your body absorb iron. This can boost your energy and fight fatigue, which is great if you’re low on iron or feeling run down.

It’s also been shown to help prevent viruses from multiplying, like the ones that cause colds or flu. With all these benefits, lactoferrin is one of the most important parts of colostrum.

3. Proline-Rich Polypeptides (PRPs)

PRPs help your body repair itself, that means they support healing, cell repair and can even have benefits to your skin and hair. There’s some studies that show PRPs can reduce the signs of aging like wrinkles!

And if that wasn’t enough they’ve been shown to speed up recovery after exercise making them helpful for a whole load of reasons.

4. Growth Factors

Growth factors are one of the most powerful things in colostrum. They help your muscles recover, keep your bones strong, and give you more energy by boosting your body’s natural fuel production.

They also improve collagen production, which keeps your skin firm and smooth. Growth factors are great for supporting long-term vitality, whether you’re staying active or just want to feel your best.

Other Beneficial Compounds in Colostrum

Colostrum isn’t just about the big four compounds (immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, PRPs, and growth factors). It also contains other ingredients that contribute to its health benefits.

Probiotics: Colostrum has natural probiotics that help support a healthy gut by promoting good bacteria. These can improve digestion, reduce bloating, and support overall gut health.

Cytokines: These are proteins that help the immune system communicate and control inflammation. They’re useful for people dealing with chronic inflammation or autoimmune issues.

Vitamins and Minerals: Colostrum is packed with nutrients like Vitamin A, B vitamins, calcium, and zinc, which support energy, bone health, and overall well-being.

Enzymes: Colostrum includes enzymes like lactoperoxidase and lysozyme that fight harmful bacteria and protect the body from infections.

Polysaccharides: These are complex carbs that improve gut health by feeding good bacteria and boosting immunity.

And for context we’ve got a table to show you how much you get in Nootrum Colostrum vs how much you’d need from another source.

What Else To Look For In Quality Colostrum Supplements

Purity and Sourcing

Generally bovine colostrum is the most well studied for use in humans, of course there’s the issue of wanting to make sure that the colostrum is hormone free and lastly most ethical suppliers follow a “calf first” policy. That means that calves receive the colostrum they need before the excess is collected for producing supplements.

What Form of Colostrum is Best?

Colostrum is widely available in gummy, powder and of course capsule form. Assuming that you’re getting enough of the compounds there isn’t going to be much difference, however, colostrum gummies are the least likely to have enough of these as the gummies hold a limited amount of colostrum and the weight required to provide enough would require an awful lot of gummies.
