What Are Chaga Mushrooms?

Chaga mushrooms, scientifically known as Inonotus obliquus, are a type of fungus that primarily grows on the bark of birch trees in cold climates. These mushrooms have a particularly distinctive appearance a burnt piece of wood, with a rugged, irregular shape. However, once you crack them open the interior of the chaga reveals a vibrant, orange-colored core that is soft and spongy in texture making them rather striking even compared to a lot of other medicinal mushrooms.

The Nutritional Profile of Chaga Mushrooms

Chaga mushrooms are known to be very low in calories, extremely high in fiber, and packed with a wide array of beneficial antioxidants and bioactive compounds.

One of the most notable features of chaga mushrooms is their exceptional antioxidant content.

They're particularly rich in a type of antioxidants called triterpenes, which have a wide array of health benefits. Additionally, chaga mushrooms contain other potent antioxidants, such as melanin, superoxide dismutase, and polyphenols, all of which play crucial roles in neutralizing harmful free radicals and protecting the body from oxidative stress.
